Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
New research reveals that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural support.
